Keeping Green?
Community Features
Children face enormous pressures in school, at home and even on the playground. The need for guidance from helping hands is great. That's why in 1991, Channel 11 launched its Care For Kids campaign. Care For Kids is more than a slogan; it is a station-wide commitment to use the power of our programming to help children in the tri-state area. Here's what we're doing:

CW11 CARE FOR KIDS FUND

In 1991, the CW11 partnered with the McCormick Tribune Foundation to create the CW11 Care for K ids Fund , a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation . Since its creation, the CW11 Care for Kids Fund has granted more than $7 million to outstanding non-profit organizations in the Tri-State area that address the unmet needs of children and their families. As an incentive to donors, the McCormick Tribune Foundation matches donations to the CW11 Care for Kids Fund at a significant percentage, making even more money available to impact on our community. The money raised from the public, plus the foundation's matching funds, are then granted to nonprofit organizations in the communities in which the funds were raised. This enables the fund to support these communities in meeting the challenges they face. The CW11 Care for Kids Fund makes grants to nonprofit organizations in the Tri-State area which address a wide range of children's needs. The fund's interests include, but are not limited to, the program areas detailed in the Primary Interests section.

Primary Interests

  • AIDS Support Services
  • Drop-out Prevention
  • Drug Abuse Prevention/Treatment
  • Child Abuse Prevention/Treatment

Geographic Priority

The Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Application Procedures

All requests for support require a completed application form to be received at the address listed above on or before October 1. Grant payments will be made annually at the end of each year. There is no guarantee of annual support. The McCormick Tribune Foundation does not make grants to programs that would financially benefit Tribune Company or any of its subsidiaries .

Community Outreach

Many CW11 employees volunteer their time as members of the Care For Kids Advisory Committee. Over the last few years, committee
members have distributed literature on drug prevention and safety tips at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and at several Chamber of Commerce street fairs.
They have assisted police officers in fingerprinting youngsters and arranged free health and immunization clinics. Our community outreach is frequently targeted to hospitals where we have distributed Care For Kids teddy bears, arranged movie screenings and special song and dance actsto entertain bedridden children. In addition, CW11 staff frequently take part in motivational discussions for tri-state area school kids. Our Care For Kids programming has been honored with the Emmy Award from the New York Academy of television arts & Sciences and numerous other prestigious awards. As part of the campaign, we have produced documentaries on lead poisoning, child abuse, the physically challenged, gun violence, child bereavement, summer fun activities and street smarts for kids.

On-Air Programming

Projects that target this audience are consistently being researched and featured on the CW11. CHANNEL 11 NEWS AT TEN has covered many stories that are important to families with young children and teenagers.Among them were reports on education, crime, health, AIDS awareness, anti-drugfeatures, volunteer activities and our extensive station outreach to kids in the community. Our quarterly specials highlight matters affecting parents, children and teens. Topics such as teen parenting, education, adoption, drug and alcohol abuse and others. We also produce public service announcements that broach a wide array of community issue related topics. We strongly support the messages of the Partnership for a Drug-Free Greater New York and the Advertising Council through the broadcast of public service announcements as part of the Care For Kids campaign. Collaborations with various local organizations have resulted in our production of several public service announcements that support specific campaign initiatives.
